Using drones to check the safety of buildings in New York

9 minute read
In New York, The technologically advanced city, The authorities are committed to the façade and safety inspection program to monitor buildings periodically, However, the human processes currently in place are not without flaws and weaknesses. Sometimes they are unable to cover all aspects of building safety. After debris falling from city buildings resulted in the most severe injuries in the death of a passerby, The need to increase safety standards is becoming more urgent, And with it appeared the need to use all available tools, Especially innovative ones, To prevent the recurrence of incidents of this kind, And to preserve the security and safety of the city's residents.

To employ innovative technology to enhance safety, New York City authorities are exploring the possibility of using drones to inspect building facades, conduct improved visual reviews, and gather the information needed to make the process more comprehensive and efficient.

Today’s construction technology is evolving faster than ever, It has expanded to include the use of advanced technologies to construct more efficient, durable and safe buildings, such as artificial intelligence and drones, The latter is used within the United States of America to conduct periodic inspections of critical infrastructure such as bridges and railways.

In New York, The technologically advanced city, The authorities are committed to the façade and safety inspection program to monitor buildings periodically, However, the human processes currently in place are not without flaws and weaknesses. Sometimes they are unable to cover all aspects of building safety.

After debris falling from city buildings resulted in the most severe injuries in the death of a passerby, The need to increase safety standards is becoming more urgent, And with it appeared the need to use all available tools, Especially innovative ones, To prevent the recurrence of incidents of this kind, And to preserve the security and safety of the city’s residents.

For now, The legally permitted use of drones in New York City is limited to government agencies authorized to respond to specific emergencies. According to current regulations, These aircraft may take off or land under prior approval or strict conditions only. This is confined to certain areas near airports, helipads and some public parks, The presence of a visible line also has a prerequisite for allowing it to operate. To change this, Commercial use of these aircraft should be permitted during the conduct of external wall inspections of buildings; This calls for new legislation to be passed by the City Council amending the Administrative Code.

The Department of Buildings has released a comprehensive report on the potential to use drone systems in New York City to assist in inspections and safety checks within city buildings. Whereas, the report concludes, Which was the result of extensive research conducted by management experts, noted that the effective use of drones is possible if it is preceded by conventional practical tests, It would conduct initial façade checks and provide additional information to the external inspector in charge.

The report begins with a careful account of the regulatory landscape affecting the use of drones in New York City. He then examines the possibilities of using these aircraft in other states, He explains how they can be used to inspect the facades of buildings within the city’s five neighborhoods, where drones can be used to collect large amounts of visual data such as photographs, videos and thermal imaging. In addition, Drone operators may be able to take pictures of hard-to-reach corners of buildings using current visual inspection methods. It is a very important feature, Especially in the examination of large buildings and skyscrapers.

Whereas, the Department will continue to conduct studies on the ways of using drones and associated technologies by specialists, The report notes that these technologies still fall short of meeting all screening requirements. For example, two-dimensional images cannot replace human vision, A flat shot may fail to show some flaws, albeit high-resolution, Even videos may miss the sensitive corners that the inspector needs to preview to estimate the dimensions of the defect, its causes, and the action needed to fix it.

therefore The report suggests the use of Lidar technology, i.e. a light-based rangefinder. or laser scanners or thermal imagers, that need further evaluation. In this way, Aircraft can be employed to conduct an initial survey before human inspections begin. This will be useful in easing procedures, saving time, equipment and the process of installing scaffolding.

When the city authorities decide on the future adoption of this technology in maintaining public safety on a large scale, It will have the challenge of collecting more data so that its decision will be decisive and based on solid information about the impact of this step on maintaining public safety. It will also have to conduct a comprehensive study of the laws, guidelines and regulations that will govern the operation of drones.

The adoption of drones is part of the approved inspection tools that enhance the accuracy of visual inspection and the documentation process. Especially in high-rise buildings, It allows accurate and continuous monitoring of the facades to anticipate any incidents. Through extensive research and accurate data collection, Municipal authorities will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the possibility of using this emerging technology to carry out more comprehensive, efficient and safe inspections. With a smaller margin of error, This will contribute to making New York City safer.

This study and its report are a first step in this area. But further studies will be required so that the relevant authorities can find ways for the safe operation of drones. large-scale operation, Within the commercial center of cities, Within a crowded urban environment such as New York City and other major cities.
