Manthan: India’s Multistakeholder Hub for Social Innovation

In today’s complex technological landscape, India’s Manthan platform emerges as a digital ecosystem that bridges the gap between diverse stakeholders. By aligning evolving technological capabilities with pressing societal needs, Manthan facilitates the development of impactful solutions to address a wide range of challenges.

Technological innovations are often viewed with a mix of excitement and apprehension. While concerns about their potential negative consequences are valid, it is equally important to recognize their immense potential to address complex societal challenges.

India’s vast population and diverse socioeconomic landscape present a myriad of challenges, ranging from healthcare disparities to environmental concerns. Amidst this complexity, the nation has experienced rapid technological advancements, with emerging technologies like AI, quantum computing, and biotechnology holding immense promise. However, the critical question remains: How can these innovations be harnessed to address the specific needs of Indian society and translate into tangible benefits for its citizens?

Recognizing its potential to become a global technological powerhouse, the Officer of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA), a government agency in India, led a collaborative initiative to establish the Manthan platform in 2022. By bringing together the government, private sector, nonprofits, and technology industry, Manthan aims to harness the nation’s collective innovation capacity and address pressing societal challenges.

Launched in conjunction with India’s 75th Independence Day, Manthan is a digital marketplace designed to foster collaboration and accelerate innovation. This digital marketplace serves as a hub for innovators, philanthropists, and academic institutions, facilitating the creation of a vibrant ecosystem where ideas can be transformed into action.

Aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, India’s Manthan platform has adopted a holistic approach to driving innovation. By focusing on key sectors such as governance, international partnerships, education, and women in STEM, Manthan aims to address pressing societal challenges. The platform has also prioritized critical areas like defence, agriculture, and healthcare, with a particular emphasis on health innovations, such as disease surveillance, vaccination, and data analytics, in line with the ‘One Health’ approach.

Rather than isolated domains, the sectors encompassed by Manthan are intricately interconnected, forming a cohesive pathway towards tangible social transformation. Spanning a diverse range of fields, including marine technology, green hydrogen, future mobility, product design, electronics, semiconductors, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and emerging technologies, Manthan offers a comprehensive view of the opportunities and challenges at the forefront of innovation.

Extending beyond India’s borders, Manthan has fostered partnerships in 14 countries, underscoring its global ambitions. By democratizing access through a free and easily accessible platform, Manthan empowers individuals and organizations worldwide to participate in innovation. Users can choose from a variety of roles, whether as demand generators, idea providers, project managers, or domain experts.

Looking ahead, the Manthan team plans to leverage artificial intelligence to expand its network of experts both within and beyond India. Additionally, the platform aims to launch a doctoral student placement marketplace, particularly for those affiliated with industrial research centres. By analysing data on industry demand for researchers in various fields, Manthan can provide students with valuable insights to guide their research endeavours and align their academic pursuits with market needs.

Like any novel concept, the Manthan platform faced the initial challenge of establishing trust among potential users. To overcome this hurdle, the platform leveraged high-visibility channels such as airport and conference advertisements, forged partnerships with media outlets, and showcased success stories on its website.

A second, paradoxical challenge emerged: how to measure success. Traditional key performance indicators evolved. For some projects, success was defined by signing memoranda of understanding or securing funding. For research initiatives, success meant translating ideas into usable technologies. This necessitated a diversification of measurement tools and a more patient approach to assessing outcomes, especially considering that meaningful social impact is seldom achieved overnight.

Significant efforts have been made to overcome the complexities inherent in international cooperation. Balancing funding, expertise, and achieving cross-border successes—such as capacity building, infrastructure development, and empowering grants—has required substantial investments of time and resources.

Since its inception, Manthan has fostered over 359 successful collaborations, resulting in 286 impactful projects. Today, the platform boasts a vibrant community of over 62,000 users, 19,907 NGOs, and 286 organizations that have endorsed the platform’s initiatives. With the support of 1,625 research institutions and the organization of 52 events and exhibitions, Manthan has become a thriving hub for innovation. Through strategic partnerships with the government, the platform has secured over $97 million in funding for emerging technologies, underscoring its significant contributions to the field.

Manthan serves as a vital bridge between innovators and those in need of their solutions. By connecting these two groups with individuals eager to make a positive social impact, Manthan fosters collaboration and accelerates the development and deployment of innovative solutions.
