Digital apps providing new public services have proven efficient worldwide in the fight against COVID-19. Governments are focused on the rapid design of digital apps that offer several features across many sectors, including health and education. Moreover, they are working to provide the necessary means of communication and information to help citizens and the government share important data and offer basic services through digital channels only.

The UK topped the list of leading countries in this field with its recent announcement to launch an app dedicated to the UK's social care workers in an attempt to support staff during the COVID-19 crisis.

It is difficult to communicate with all 18,000 staff members in one clear way. Therefore, NHSX, affiliated with the National Health Service (NHS), has developed the Care Workforce app as a single digital hub for all social care workers to provide the latest and most important information, guidance, support, and discounts on their mobile phones.

This is a one-of-a-kind tool for social care workers offering the support, guidance, and advice they need to protect themselves from the virus and remain healthy. Furthermore, it provides access to learning resources on important areas, such as infection control, as well as practical advice to promote mental health. The app instructs workers how to benefit from their offers, such as free parking and discounts from several institutions and initiatives. The tool also allows access to mental health apps, such as Silvercloud, Daylight, and Sleepio, which tackle sleep, stress, and agility.

This app is an extension of the social welfare plan launched recently by the government and comprises a series of actions, including increasing the number of tests and providing access to personal protective equipment for all frontline workers. Moreover, the app works as a networking platform to bring social care workers together in one single space to share knowledge, best practices, and inspiring stories from across the sector.

Such initiatives that support frontline workers who struggle to keep their communities healthy are of major importance because they empower them to continue their noble work and valiant efforts during these critical times.
